Synopsis

The programme begins with a rousing Middle Eastern percussion performance, followed by a detailed demonstration of the rhythms of the Middle East and the various exotic instruments which produce them.

Students will then actually play the rhythms by clapping various rhythmic combinations along with the percussionists, thus creating a wonderful collaboration between students and musicians.

Using these and other interactive clapping/drumming segments, participants will understand basic rhythmic concepts such as time signatures, tempo and interplay between different rhythms. We also include a short segment demonstrating the connection between the rhythms and other aspects of Middle Eastern music. The overall programme uses the excitement and power of percussion to showcase the culture of the Middle East, impart an understanding of rhythmic concepts, and provide a chance to make music along with the musicians.
